Shopping in your jammies?

A TESCO store has banned customers from doing shopping in their PYJAMAS.

Locals regularly pop in wearing night clothes and slippers.
Many are young single mums from the surrounding estate, which is notorious for the large number on benefits.

Staff have noticed more and more pushing trolleys in PJs after dropping their kids off at school in the morning. Other shoppers have complained that the sight makes them "uncomfortable and embarrassed".

Mum-of-two Elaine Carmody fell foul of the new dress code yesterday at the branch in St Mellons, Cardiff.

She was told to abandon her trolley and escorted out by a guard.

Elaine, 24, said: "I've got lovely pairs of pyjamas with bears and penguins on them. I've worn my best ones today, just so I look tidy.

"Loads of people go in wearing jogging bottoms. What's the difference?"

A notice at the entrance bans nightwear and urges shoppers to dress appropriately to avoid causing offence.

A spokesman for the store said the move was a response to customer feedback. He was not aware of any other branch having similar signs.

Many shoppers at the store backed the ban yesterday. But others on the estate were furious and vowed to switch to a rival supermarket.

One mum said: "This is pathetic and shows how snobbish some people can be. Do they have any idea how difficult it is to get three kids off to school when you're a single parent? You haven't got time to get all dolled up."

Why is wearing your Jammies any different to going shopping in a veil? Either we all have the right to wear what we like or none of us do.

If Tesco can ban pyjamas, why not burkhas which actually pose a real security risk?

Going out in your jammies shopping is a bit crap really isn't it? How slovenly.

I would laugh out loud if I saw someone at the supermarket wearing jammies who wasn't in a wheelchair being taken for a bit of a shop if they were from a hospice or ill or a hospital. There is no need for it.

I think what they mean are these 24hr stores where some people go shopping at 3am. Ive done it myself (minus the jammies) and its a great time to shop. You have the entire place to yourself!

Actually, they have reprimanded the person/s responsible for this shocking behaviour, and said it's alright to shop at nightie! :P

Funny when I read this the other day, as on Monday, as I was shopping, a wee girl was with her mum walking about in her pj's in the supermarket, ( not Tesco's). I commented to her that if I could get away with it, I too would do the same. I presumed the child was ill, as this was the afternoon, and the mum looked exhausted, and seemed pleased I didn't offer insult to the child not being properly dressed.
I admit to shoving on a coat over my night clothes and driving to the garage, so why not a supermarket? It all comes down to how hardnecked u are, I suppose.

I would never go out in my jammies to shop, but we don't have 24hr shopping here. I think El is right though, they are allowed to wear the burka and the muslim jammies, I really don't see the difference. Ban all or none...simple as. I might put a coat over my jammies to pop out to the garage late at night, but certainly not to the shops. Kids here often go out for dinner or the movies in their pyhamas, if they fall asleep then parents can put them straight into bed, It's normal to see kids here in pyjamas, but I don't think I have ever seen an adult. When we were kids, we used to go to parties in our pyjamas, we were put into bed with all the other kids and when we got home were again put straight into bed.

If I went out in my pj's i'd probably get hauled in as an escaped and wondering Alzheimers patient!

Funnily enough, I saw a young woman in our local Tesco Express last week I think it was . She was in her pj's, dressing gown and slippers. I did do a double take, mind you I guess she had run out of milk or bread to send off her little ones to school!

In truth she'd probably run out of fags and lager! It was only 8.30 am after all.

I don't like this trend..Here it's in the dodgy places like Kirkby and Bootle and Skelmersdale that I've seen it, though I'm not around those areas too much, thankfully.

I have seen peeps at the garage on Sunday morning/miday get out of cars in their jammies and go in for fags n stuff

I have to laugh I thought it was just round here everyone but me seems to wear pj's .Honestly ive seen women walk to and from the local shop in their pj's and slippers but Ive never seen any in my local supermarket .
Someone metioned the muslims and their use of pj,s and I totally agree there should be one rule for everyone .

I agree Mello, what is the difference between Muslim Jammies and English jammies? I would never go out in pyjamas though, not even to a corner shop if we had one. lol
