PRESIDENT Obama yesterday scrapped a mission to put men back on the Moon - as he battled to combat a £1TRILLION US budget deficit.
NASA's Constellation project - started by his predecessor George W Bush - aimed to set up a lunar base in 2020.

But it was over budget and ten years behind schedule.

Mr Obama said: "We cannot spend as if the hard-earned tax of American people can be treated like Monopoly money."

He ordered NASA to develop longer-term technologies and join other nations to explore Mars, the Moon and asteroids.

Astronaut Buzz Aldrin, who landed on the Moon in 1969, backed Mr Obama and called for cash for space travel to go "further, faster".

He said: "We've already been to the Moon. Mars is the next frontier."

I think establishing a base on the Moon is essential if we are to ever harbour any hopes of reaching Mars. Less gravity on the Moon means it would be far easier to launch rockets from there than it currently is on Earth.

Getting men to step foot on Mars is pointless if it's to be treated as a PR stunt. There must be some reason for doing it with some long term goal.

If our species is ever going to survive we must begin looking at ways of establishing colonies elsewhere and IMO the Moon is the first step.

I was watching 'Unexplained Mysteries' the other day and the secrecy from NASA and other Government Agencies was incredible. People lives were threatened if they spoke up about things they has witnessed. One guy who had worked at a secret 'star wars' project on a military base said he had heard signals from other planets, he has also seem photo's of structures on Mars.

I think many Governments are spending fortunes on Space Exploration, but its all kept Top Secret. There are many huge underground bases around the world where top secret stuff is going on all the time.

We are all expected to pay for these Top Secret Projects, never allowed to know anything about them.

While budget deficits are so large it's hard to justify hugely expensive Capital Programmes such as Space Exploration. Money should be spent on repairing the country's infrastructure, the elderly, children, education, sport and the health programme.

Completely agree but I can't help but think that space exploration is necessary to evolve our understanding of our own planet.

I also can't help but think there would be plenty of funds available if money was not squandered in the manner it is.

Take for example the recent bank bailouts. Yes the banks were at fault but crucially so was the system for ever allowing it to happen in the first place.

The tax payer bailed out the banks, now they are still giving out millions in bonuses.

I hope they don't get to Mars, they would slaughter anyone they came across, would you want your tax dollars to go towards the annihilation of whomever they found on any Planet?
