Gunfire at the England Camp
FA security chiefs were last night probing a shooting incident close to the England team's hotel.
Police opened fire after a high-speed car chase on the highway near the main entrance of the Royal Bafokeng Sports Campus in Rustenburg, South Africa.
The suspect, a drunken off-duty COP, was finally stopped and arrested half a mile from the heavily-guarded gates of the Three Lions' World Cup base.
The alert came as it emerged that England's stars are being guarded by a 100-strong "A-Team" of former SAS soldiers and terrorist experts.
Officers who held the car suspect discovered he was a 49-year-old police colonel who had sped away from cops on the wrong side of the road towards the team HQ after a booze binge.
Two warning shots were fired over his head when he failed to surrender. He eventually stopped and was found to be unarmed.
He was freed after blood tests but is due to be charged with drink driving and traffic offences.
A passer-by who saw the shooting said: "I saw the police chasing this guy. Their blue lights were flashing and sirens screaming, but he didn't stop. Then they opened fire on him. I heard shots and was scared I may get hit in the crossfire, so I took shelter."
Police spokesman Colonel Junior Metsi said: "At Thabane on the way from Rustenburg to Phokeng a police patrol spotted a Toyota Corolla travelling at high speed on the wrong side of the road. They gave chase and alerted colleagues in Phokeng who joined in the pursuit.
"A few kilometres from the Sports Campus they alerted police guarding England's players. When the suspect saw the police approaching from the England hotel he did a U-turn and tried to drive back to Phokeng, again on the wrong side of the road.
"Police then fired warning shots and the suspect stopped his car and was arrested. At no stage was he a threat to the England players and he was not trying to get into the campus."
An FA spokesman said: "This did not happen on the campus and we have no comment."
Meanwhile, each England player has been allocated two "professional killers" to keep him safe at the World Cup, which kicks off in two days. The squad's stars are being minded around-the-clock by the ex-SAS soldiers and terrorist experts giving them more security than the QUEEN - although they have been ordered to stay "low-key" and "out of sight" in public.
And the entire squad has been put through training simulations and exercises in case the unthinkable happens.
The security team - provided by South African authorities and the FA, who have hired their own firm of specialists - is the biggest ever for a World Cup. It comes after the tournament was deemed the riskiest ever - with the "very real" threat of terrorism and kidnap.
A former SAS insider, with colleagues working for the private security firm hired by the FA, said: "We live in dangerous times and this is the most protected England team ever. "The biggest threat is kidnap by crime lords who know a ransom would be worth millions.
"There is also the ongoing threat posed by terrorist groups, running at a high for the match against the USA.
"Right now Rooney, Lampard and Beckham are as much of a target as world leaders. But the men guarding them are the best in the world. England is in safe hands."
He spoke as it emerged that ex-skipper David Beckham is at the centre of an al-Qaeda World Cup kidnap plot.
Fanatics held online discussions about snatching the England legend, 35, to exchange him for convicted terrorists held in British jails. They are furious that the crocked star paid a morale-boosting visit to British troops in Afghanistan.

Re: Gunfire at the England Camp
If it wasn't for the world cup, that cop wouldn't have been arrested at all, it's the way they all behave. If it hadn't happened close to the England Camp, he would have carried on driving in that state, possibly killing a few innocents along the way. Our Police Force are not protectors of the people, they are mostly uneducated, ignorant, drunken corrupt killers.

Dolly, our cops are a disgrace, I will never go near a Police Station. A young girl was raped by her step father, she went to the cops for help and the station commander raped her again!! Many woman have been raped by Police and they are ALL still working! There is no law here, we take the Law into our own hands, we have to.

Re: Gunfire at the England Camp
Nel, the majority of our police are illiterate, they get hardly any training and all they know is violence and corruption. They are loathed by most of the country. One Station Commander was caught in an armed robbery, he shot a security guard with his police issue weapon, that Station Commander is still in his job, still earning a salary! The security guards family live in abject poverty after losing the only bread-winner in the family. If it wasn't for the kindness of people helping them to survive and the children get an education, they would be dead. There are 1000's of stories like this, but nothing is ever done.
There is a terrible sickness in this country, its worse than anything that happened under Apartheid.
