ILLEGAL milk from the offspring of a CLONED cow is being sold in British shops, it was claimed today.

The Food Standards agency are urgently investigating after reports that a British farmer admitted using milk from the cow bred from a clone.

The dairy farmer — who wanted to stay anonymous — said he used the milk as part of his daily production.

Under European law, food and drink produced from cloned animals MUST pass a safety evaluation and get approval before going on shop shelves.

Banned

The FSA, the UK body responsible for assessing food produced by cloned animals and their offspring, said it has never authorised the food for mass sale - or been asked to do so.

A spokeswoman said: "Since 2007 the FSA interpretation of the law has been that meat and products from clones and their offspring are considered novel foods and would therefore need to be authorised before being placed on the market.

"As the UK authority responsible for accepting novel food applications, the agency has not received any applications relating to cloning and no authorisations have been made.

"The agency will, of course, investigate any reports of unauthorised novel foods entering the food chain."

A spokeswoman for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) referred inquiries to the FSA.

There was concern about calves born to cloned parents three years ago when it emerged that a calf from a cloned cow was born on a British farm.

Dundee Paradise was said to have been born to a surrogate mother on a Midlands farm after she was flown into Britain as a frozen embryo.

Her mother was created in the US using cells from the ear of a champion dairy Holstein, according to reports.

Later that year, public outrage caused Dundee Paradise and her brother, Dundee Paratrooper, to be withdrawn from an auction but it is thought they went on sale privately instead.

Would you be happy drinking milk from a cloned cow? If not, why not?

Is animal cloning a viable answer to world hunger?

You would think that in this day and age, with all the techology available, and resourses at hand ect, hunger could be irradicated. Cloning animals for milk, food seems a good start. So long as its safe, then why not.

I agree...BUT

Maybe cloning for food ISN'T a good idea if you think along the lines of our global population being too high as it is. Is an infinite source of food really a good idea? Would it lead to an increase in the problems we currently face with our limited global resources such as fuel etc?

And what about water? Giving people enough to eat is great but what about giving them enough to drink?

The sensible answer would be, send a load of Johnny's to stop them breeding, simple!

Makes me laugh, everybody moans at how the good old English slapper which treats her kids like shit and how out of order she is, but the real cruelty to children is allowing MILLIONS of AFRICANS and ASIANS to breed like rabbits allowing their children to starve from birth, and we are paying also for them as well as the English slapper, the difference is the 3rd world people peer out of their tents whilst the English slapper doesn't make an appearance as it is more than likely that it is stoned or pissed. Very Happy
