David Cameron - You're A Cheeky Bastard!

DAVID Cameron pledged yesterday to name and shame town hall fat cats if the Tories win power.

Details of local government staff on £58,500 or more would be put online so people can judge if they give "value for money".

Labour want to publish the names of town hall bosses on £150,000 or more.

Under the Tory plans, expenses claims of well-paid staff would also be publicised.

In a speech in London, Mr Cameron told Tory councillors: "People up and down the country are tightening their belts.

"What must they think when they see local government chief executives earning more in a year than some of them will earn in a decade?"

He said Kingston-upon-Hull's chief executive is paid £213,162 - that's £15,473 more than Gordon Brown.

"Eighteen staff in Islington Council in North London get at least £100,000.

The Tory chief said: "Is this really value for money? Taxpayers should have the tools and information to decide, and with our plans they will."

He also said every piece of expenditure of more than £500 would be published. In return, councils would get more freedom to decide spending priorities.

Matthew Sinclair of the TaxPayers' Alliance said the proposals "would shine a welcome light into some of the darkest corners of local government".

But the Local Government Association argued the "same rules of openness" should also be applied to senior staff in central government.
