Hilary Benn has backed down on his slopbucket scheme
Plans to make every home have a kitchen slopbucket have been scrapped in a Government climbdown.
Environment Secretary Hilary Benn's retreat came just hours after he insisted families would be happy to take part.
The compulsory home food recycling scheme would have seen householders forced to separate food, tea bags and vegetable peelings into different bins. Those who failed to comply would have faced the threat of fines.
But yesterday a consultation paper from Mr Benn said householders and families would not, after all, have to bear the burden of a new recycling campaign.
It was his second U-turn in a matter of days following the embarrassing climbdown on dog insurance earlier this week.
The waste scheme was developed at the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs after it became clear that encouraging councils to adopt fortnightly rubbish collections was a political disaster.
Yesterday, speaking at 8am at a London recycling plant, Mr Benn said: 'The vast majority of people will say, "Yes, we don't want this stuff to go into landfill, we want to play our part so we can get the value out, help reduce some of the costs, save the planet and re-use materials.”'
But by 1pm, when his consultation paper was made public, he had changed his mind. The paper said: The intention is that any obligation to sort would fall primarily on the waste collection authority.'
This implies rubbish would be separated at council-run recycling plants. But councils reacted angrily to the idea of paying for expensive and untried systems and indicated they would rather encourage families to join voluntary schemes.

Are they really still trying to lie to the public about Global Warming? They have been proven to have falsified figures, their lies have been exposed at long last, yet they still persist in brainwashing the public!
We save all veg peelings etc. they go onto a compost head for the garden, but to be expected to separate different types of food is madness. Threats of fines..........FO Labour!!!
